From Coach Mark Marshall - Thoughts For The Holiday Season

Parents & Players: I wanted to send a note to everyone prior to the holiday and thank everyone for being part of our program. I also hope that everyone will give a big thanks to Tex for allowing us to continue in this program. I know I appreciate the opportunity Tex allows me to have here. I have included a note below that outlines a conversation I once had with Coach Bob Weir. As I stated at the dinner, we are here to make a new history for Plano Soccer, yet it is still important to hear, time-to-time, from the winningest coach in the history of High School Soccer in Texas (Six state titles).

Coach Weir once talked to me about how lonely it was to coach soccer at the high school level back in the early days. Even as time went on, even as popularity grew for the sport, people other than the families of players rarely showed an interest. He never had anyone want to help with the team, never had anyone taking pictures on the sidelines, never had an administrator come down after the game to congratulate them when they won at home; they never even had any trainers who wanted to work with the soccer team….he did it all. He was given a JV coach in the late 80’s, but that was always a football coach who was coaching soccer because he was assigned to it and really did not have much knowledge or interest in the sport.

When they started to win, that all changed. Then after the first state championship, others wanted to get involved and help. It was easy to get student trainers and managers. The administration took notice and the fan base grew. His point to all of this was that if you are successful, people show interest. This is true in all levels of sports.

But prior to this time, he and his players focused on what was at stake for each of them. It was important to each of them who put their heart into the program. They felt, at times, like it was them against the world. None of them ever had a bad attitude about practice or losing games; they were not expected to win and if they did, no one really noticed. There was no pressure to win because they did not place it on themselves, they did not know how. Once they figured out how to positively put pressure on each other to do well, it began to turn. They were competitive in practice to make their teammates better. They supported each other in the games and communicated positively. Everyone attended meetings and dinners together. They all wanted to create a memory that no one could ever take away. They simply wanted to win district. Back then, only one team would go to the playoffs, then eventually two. It wasn’t enough to get second place, they wanted to be first. Once it happened, it was contagious and they lived for that feeling of success.

I hope that, after thinking about this conversation, as the holiday season ends and we get back to work, everyone will continue the positive energy we have had this Fall and commit to making us all the best we can be – for each other - in 2018.

Happy Holidays!
